Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Publications Management:
- Serve as the lead for all YPFP publications initiatives
- Direct the Rising Experts Program (REP), a flagship eight month-long initiative designed to elevate the voices of emerging foreign policy professionals through mentorship, writing development, and publication.
- Define and uphold standards of excellence in editorial direction, ensuring consistency, helpful critique, and programmatic support
- Leadership of the Rising Experts Program:
- Recruit, vet, interview, and select REP cohort members annually, ensuring a diverse and high-potential group of early-career professionals.
- Manage and support a team of Assistant Managing Editors, editors, and program volunteers, facilitating regular meetings and clear communication to maintain cohesion and high performance.
- Manage the full publication cycle of REP participants, including guidance on research topics, editing, and ensuring timely publication of op-eds and analysis.
- Facilitate process of joint article collaborations
- Organize Discussion Group events led by Rising Experts
- Curate and coordinate a minimum of four writing-focused workshops annually for Rising Experts, aimed at improving their writing, learning more about the function of op-eds, and getting insights into what editors are looking for.
- Content Development and Editorial Oversight:
- Work with editor for Charged Affairs, YPFP’s blog, ensuring a consistent publication cadence and a diverse range of voices and topics.
- Ensure that editorial outputs from REP and Charged Affairs meet organizational quality benchmarks and align with global policy discourse.
- Communications and Outreach
- Collaborate with the VP of Communications to develop and implement a digital strategy to publicize publications.
- Identify and cultivate partnerships with media platforms, think tanks, and academic journals to broaden the reach of YPFP-authored content.
- Expand YPFP’s network of publishing partners while maintaining strong relationships with existing outlets to ensure a consistent publication process for Rising Experts.
- Cross-Organizational Integration:
- Liaise with the broader YPFP organization to align publication efforts with YPFP programming and strategic goals.
- Collaborate on cross-functional initiatives, such as joint events, speaker opportunities, and thematic series that elevate member research and analysis.
Desirable Skills and Attributes
- Excellent editorial judgment and attention to detail in reviewing policy op-eds.
- Proven experience managing early-career progressionals in a writing-intensive context.
- Ability to juggle multiple editorial timelines and manage a remote, , volunteer-based editorial team and program cohort.
- Strategic thinker with a passion for narrative impact, global affairs, and elevating diverse perspectives.
- Familiar with the policy media landscape and attuned to foreign policy publication trends.
Eligibility and Requirements
- 2+ years of journalism experience, editorial experience, or delivering policy analysis to professional or academic audiences.
- Demonstrated success publishing op-eds or commentary
- Strong technical and analytical writing skills and experience working with writers to refine and elevate their work.
- Proven leadership and team management skills, especially in coordinating volunteer teams.
- Self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively within a globally distributed team.
- Good knowledge of global affairs
- Familiarity with YPFP
